Design developement

I haven't really had any formal assignments yet. Just a lot of developing ideas at my own pace. Which is worrying, cause I get too much time to mull things over in my brain. I decided to push ahead and start doing the designs for everything I knew would be coming up in the near future.
So here is some work my short story pitch.

Lesson number 1 is how to catch a moth.

He's just so cute.
The chameleon has been some work, don't really think he's ready yet.
Some more exploration of his dimensionality. Wanted to clear up all his forms.
This is just a toss in. Was going to start designing the other characters for the idea.
The post below is new stuff too. A little bit of an apology for how rough and unclear my posts have been as of late.

Extra goodies

On top of designing for group film, I've been trying to figure out what I want to do for my action analysis. I've been boarding out a lot of ideas, but nothing is really singing to me yet.

I wanted to do a little piece about an eager scout at first. I didn't want the design of the kid to be generic, so I thought about how people I knew would look as kids. Then I just decided to design me and some of the guys as cub scouts for the lol.

This one's a troll, I wanted to be a frog farmer.

Another design for the troll. Basically the premise was he finds a turtle snapping at his frogs, and hits it all the way to Timbuktu with a log/club.

And I did spend the time to think about how I want to resculpt my orangutan. I haven't started it yet, but the schematics exist.

Story designing

They changed up third year a little, so we all have to write and design our own stories for a while. I have 2 written up, and haven't decided which one to go with, so I've just been designing both.
One of them have this forest deity, He's like a duck, a goat, and a lion put together. And when he's not stuffing his face, he can zoom around like a fat humming bird.
And yes, he can lay on the smolder.
His deity powers let him change people into the essence of their totems. So I made a totem design for him.
I've also been trying to design an elderly chameleon. This design can't be used, cause he's gotta talk and convey some other emotions. But it just looked so blobby. Maybe I'll refine this one later.

WIP Orangutan 2 + a treat

So I've been sculpting this thing forever, and got it to almost done, and decided it wasn't capturing the likeness well enough, so I destroyed it. but I took some pics before that day. I actually had his beard hairs done too, but hey what you gonna do.
I'm restarting him right now, so maybe in another 2 weeks it'll be done, lol.

As a special treat, here's an assignment I did a while ago. Had to turn a caricature into a character. I chose Bijan, cause you put a beard and thick eyebrows on, and bam it's him :D.
I also took this video with intent of drawing from it. But I guess I've stared at Bijan long enough I could just draw everything from memory. I almost forgot to mention. Purple shirts are chick magnets.

Gaur

Everyone should have a special bond with an animal at the zoo. I personally love Molek the Orangutan. Amanda's is the Gaur. I thought I'd draw her a little present :D.

On another note, Howcome my zoo drawings are so bad, but if I sketch from memory stuff like this happens? Oh, and I'm going to try and finish that orangutan today, barring distractions may arise. Scrabble anyone?

WIP Orangutan

I started sculpting this orangutan head a long time ago. He's also my icon for my blog. It still needs some fixing, maybe bigger eyebrows, and a lot of smoothing before it gets baked, but a rough sculpt is usually good enough to tell how somethings going to turn out.

Doodles

I've been trying to copy drawings everyday. It gives my brain a rest after work, while upping my drawing skill. But sometimes I get board of that, and just doodle. So here are some random animal designs. I know you love the cellphone camera updates, lol.

An eager young jaguar, actually for a film concept.
Some forest critters, I was going to design a header for my blog I think.
That little rabbit made me want to draw an old rabbit.
Crocs are cool

The Summer of George!

So I went on this awesome trip to San Diego, and probably should of blogged about it, but whatever. It had several highlights, that'll probably define my coolness factor for the rest of my life. Ie. Touring Disney studios, seeing a prerelease of "Scott Pilgrim vs. the World", meeting all of my artistic influences in the flesh (Mike Mignola, John Nevarez, Chris Sanders, Stephen Silver, David Coleman, Joe Weatherly, Dean Yeagle, Jin Kim, and the awesome Glen Keane. I probably have missed some people, but I wrote down everything awesome I did in a little list in my sketchbook. I knew the euphoria would quickly overwhelm my memory). Oh, and I surfed!!! Radical.

The strange thing is that this amazing trip doesn't seem out of place in the awesome summer I've been having. Whether it's manifested from my own hard work, just pure luck, or maybe I've just become more open to the idea of cool things happening to me... a lot of really cool stuff has just fallen into my lap.

So now to the part where I justify making a post : How to train your Dragon

I've spent a long time waiting for cool things to come from this movie. In April I asked a theatre for their display, and spent 2 months calling everyday until finally I got my beautiful collectibles that now decorate my room.
In March I ordered the art of book for the movie, and now draw from it as often as I can. I've been very surprised how naturally drawing in Nicolas Marlet's style has come to me. Here are some COPIES from the book.

I've now started drawing the characters in my own posing, and hoping to maintain the look of the characters.

And a little something extra for myself. You always gotta draw that person you're drawing with.

Cellphone Camera Part 1/2

This is a WIP sculpture of my Orangutan character design. Thought he'd be difficult and fun to sculpt.
So I went all creeper mode and started taking pics around a PJ's Pet shop. It's starting to become a habit, I just really like looking at the animals. So I busted out my cellphone camera, cause taking out a sketchpad would of been a lot creepier of me.

PIRANHAS
This one's actually from the zoo, but I really like it. It's a picture of a turtle underwater, through glass, I don't know how it turned out so well.
Chameleon, more in him in the other post.
This iguana had the most evil eyes. I don't want to stereotype, but he just looked like he wanted to plan my demise.

Cellphone Camera Part 2/2

I never knew how weird Gecko headshapes could be
Lol, these bearded dragons trying to intimidate me... I love the 'double dragon' feel they are giving off.
One of the hundreds of fish species they have around.
Panther Chameleon, just sound dangerous, but he moves and acts like a grumpy old man.
The best was when he walked away, he rotated one eye to just watch me as he grumpily shuffled along the branches.
Parrots are always cool, but he was at the front of the store, so I didn't want to linger and grab a ton of photos of him.
