Today just deserves to be marked.

Today was just a weird day, and a really sad one too. I don't feel like going into details, but it was an important day to me, and I'm sure the rest of my family. It's inevitable I'll make a post revealing why later.

Onto other things I feel like talking about. Character design was finished yesterday, when I get the chance I'll put all the panels into a movie type thing again. And cause I didn't feel like doing any work when I got home, I watched Atlantis. Which is kinda productive because I'll be animating Helga Sinclair from that movie starting tomorrow.

Painting again

second painting... much more challenging then the first. Started way uglier on the acrylic side than the last one. but I forgot to take the process pictures. Enjoy anyways.

Painting

Gotta do some serious painting before wednesday. still got one more of these to go.
I have to say I'm not a very good painter, it just takes a lot of time, and control over your paints. I think I'd probably do much better if I had gallons of gouache I could just slab on to fix up things. Or some device that automatically repeats the colours I made before.
Regardless keeping in theme to the last couple posts, thought I'd throw up the process work for the painting I have finished.
In order (left to right -> top to bottom) the original thumbnail (at about 1/3rd the size of the final). The acrylic base. My first gouache layer. The final painting. The lighting for my camera is kinda messed, because these were done over 2 days. Literally day, night, day, night. which is why the one's on the left look much better.

Oh and the giant sundial in the river will make sense when the second painting is finished.

hmm..

Progression.

Today I started boarding out the incredibly lengthy character design project

Remember the chameleon in the last post. I said he would change... couple dozen drawings later, and here he is now. Although unnecessary it would be fun to one day make a quick slideshow of one character from start to finish, and show how they slightly change from drawing to drawing. just a thought.
Right before I uploaded this post I figured I might as well do a head rotation, and then I forgot to put on his glasses, oops.

This was my mock up drawing at the start of the day. I spent probably an hour deciding what kind of layout I wanted and how I would put this together. I even grabbed a sculpture I made of an old character and props around the house, to try and make up a fake 3d layout.

I did a quick number of very small story sketches. once I was decently happy with them, I redrew what I had at about a quarter size of what the final will be. Some of the drawings are recycled, and the posing has to be fixed a bit. But I wanted to see how it would run, and finally decided since I made it a quicktime I might as well post it.

Oh and the idea is that this chameleon is camera shy, but wants to take a picture of himself. Just incase it doesn't read properly.

Some sort of post?

We, as in the people that live with me, decided to collectively straighten up the house. Which was a task for me, cause I've been saving pretty much every drawing this year in random piles. Now I have them sorted out by classes, and projects. And I even have whole big folders dedicated to specific characters who have gone through lots of changes in design. Regardless the place is tidy, and today seemed like that perfect day to set up my sweet scanner/printer combo, and make a blog post. Well the people who sell printers apparently don't include the cable you need to hook your printer up.
So since I was going to make a post anyways, you'll just have to settle for the same low resolution I always put up.

I'm not going to post everything I wanted cause I'd like to save some stuff for a better post when I can scan em. But this first picture is just from character design class when we hybridized animals. I threw in a muskox, and my friend threw in a chicken, and a good ole' football playing monster came out.

Character design also gave us an assignment to make an anthropomorphic character in a scene.
There's been a bunch of changes since this drawing. but since I was looking at the progression of all my work this year, I thought I'd put down pretty much the original drawing of this character.

Oh and I should just add, congrats to all the first years on the bone test. I hope we all did well, and now we're pros that can for instance go to the doctor and annoy them by saying what part of our butts hurt. And of course draw it in great detail.

Art over the holidays

So the holidays came, and I didn't draw for the first week or so at all. And realized I was getting really horrible at drawing because of it. So then I guilted myself into trying to draw all the time. of the sketches below, probably half were done since the weekend, and I'm not gonna dig up the ones I do on scrap pads laying around. Oh, and they were all uploaded from my cell camera, cause I haven't busted open the sweet printer/scanner combo I got for X-mas, I'm gonna bring to Oakville with me :D!

I started sketching what I watched on TV. bit of mythbusters, little hell's kitchen. All of the drawings below are done in under 5 min. I don't like drawing slow for details, unless I do it as a learning excercise.

I've also been playing around a bit with character design. Especially working on eyes, and jawlines. Instead of doing pure monsters like I usually do, I tried to do some human characters, but some old favorites always drop in. (And my sleeping father, lol)

I couldn't resist drawing my brother, his hair is ridiculous in real life. and I thought I'd get myself some reference so I can animate him or something when I'm in school. Oh and there's that girl from Atlantis on that page, and a drawing of Scarlett johanson in the bottom right of the pic above.

Final segment of this post, are just some concept sketches of decorating a toy I did for a friend. I worked on it through one long night, just using felt markers. to produce the final product below.

Now I think my service to those who are nice enough to read this thing is done. I have a bones of the human body to study for. I got all the names of parts memorized, I just have to be able to draw them all now, still got 2 weeks or so to master that though.

videos

I uploaded 2 new things to my youtube account.
http://youtube.com/user/allumen

It's just the ball and tail, and my animatic. I forgot to put my boxfold on my external hardrive, oops.

model sheets

First real post in a while. These are both model sheets. The first one is Scarfers, for character design class we had to do an expression page.

This second model sheet was for the storyboard test. I actually really like this character, especially the full body drawing in the middle, with him gripping the bars. Not everything is done to what I would consider as on model, but I did this thing in one night.

place holder

I feel bad for not posting for a while. I have stuff to put up but I just have to transfer it from school. but you can settle for these quick character sketches for my storyboard test tomorrow.

There will be a real post before the holidays... Promise.
